USB adapters for DC power
USB usually facilitates downstream power transfer in the relationship between host and connected devices. Unlike bidirectional data transfer, current transfer is unidirectional.
There are 3 main categories of downstream USB ports that can be charged.
The Standard Downstream Port (SDP) operates at 0.1A to 0.5A and is the type of port used for charging on computers and laptops.
Downstream ports (CDP) carry DC currents of up to 1.5A.
The Dedicated Charging Port (DCP) consists of a wall socket with a built-in USB power adapter and a power module that transfers current at a rate greater than 1.5A to actively charge the device.
USB power is normally supplied at 5 volts with a variance of 5%. pins inside the USB connector carry data (D+ and D-) and the external pins carry current. Each pin is connected to a wire, and there are four wires in the USB charging cable. The higher specification USB 3.0 has an additional 5 pins for faster charging. Power charging via the USB adapter requires the supply voltage to be converted to standard 5V.
Multiple devices can be charged simultaneously via the USB port, but the charging speed may not be optimal. The higher specification "SuperSpeed" USB can adequately handle larger loads and charge multiple devices quickly.
